One of the visionary multimedia artists of our time, Doug Aitken
has worked in every medium: from architecture and photography, to
sculpture and film, to installations and interventions. While
Aitken's art varies in both theme and context, his installations
encourage audience interaction and communal gathering, whether this
is accomplished by staging a series of happenings, such as those
that took place at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, during his
Sleepwalkers exhibition in 2007, or by the creation of large-scale,
outdoor installations such as 2009's Sonic Pavilion in Brazil,
where he amplified the sounds of the Earth. His film and
photography often explore themes of displacement and travel, united
by his keen awareness of motion, sound, and color that come
together to create his signature, dreamlike landscapes and the
futurist aesthetic for which he has become known. His projects defy
convention, creating new perspectives by challenging traditional
linear narratives. Aitken has collaborated with talents from a
broad range of disciplines, from Werner Herzog and Rem Koolhaas to
Lou Reed. This beautifully designed book, made in close
collaboration with the artist, is the first to examine Aitken's
artistic development and surveys his work in all mediums.
With specially commissioned photography, this unprecedented volume
celebrates a legacy of accessories design by the legendary couture
house of Valentino. This lavish tribute to the couture house of
Valentino's accessories line is exceptionally timely: since the
long-time accessories team, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo
Piccioli, took over as the creative directors for Valentino in
2008, the house has experienced record-breaking success and
received international acclaim. Known for their daring approach
redefining femininity, Chiuri and Piccioli's continuance of
accessories design has only magnified the line's popularity.
Equally important is Chiuri and Piccioli's transformation of
traditional Italian handcraftsmanship into a new international
barometer of glamorous design. By infusing the highest quality
materials and crafts with streetwise attitude, their accessories
have become some of the most coveted items in the fashion world.
Valentino: Objects of Couture showcases commissioned images and
artworks by various well-known artists-David Bailey, Luisa Lambri,
Nobuyoshi Araki, Duane Michals, Scheltens & Abbenes, Philip
Lorca di Corcia and Douglas Gordon-of over 300 of the house of
Valentino's most well-known accessory designs. Art directed by
REM-Ruini e Mariotti and along with an insightful essay by the art
curator Francesco Bonami, this work presents a rich volume in
celebration of Valentino's exquisitely designed collections. This
book is perfect for devotees of fashion, style, photography, and
glamour, and also anyone who understands that a Valentino handbag
or heels, even when paired with jeans, is statement-worthy.

Not far from Milan, in the hills of the northern Italian
countryside, lies the estate of famed Italian artist Enrico Baj.
This jewel of a book offers a unique lens through which to consider
a true artistic giant of the late twentieth century associated with
Dada, Surrealism, Art Informel, and CoBrA, as well as Nuclear Art,
a movement he cofounded. Organized as a tour of the artist s home,
from full rooms designed with a great attention to detail to entire
walls covered floor to ceiling with paintings by the artist to a
headboard carved directly into a wall, almost every surface of the
house is covered in work made by Baj himself. While his subject
matter may have been deeply serious (many of Baj s works reveal an
obsession with nuclear war and the abuse of political power), as
this book shows, his work was always playful and vibrant, often
incorporating bits of found materials like military medals,
seashells, rope, and twine. Whether one focuses on the luxurious
trim and tassel of a bedroom curtain or the deeply personal
arrangement of treasured sculptures on a dressing room table, every
corner of the estate is energized by the element of surprise. This
book showcases the artist s individual touch and provides a wealth
of playful vignettes to inspire homeowners, collectors, and artists
alike.
